A flood advisory is in effect until 10:30 a.m. Tuesday for Hawaii Island.
At 7 a.m., radar and rain gauges showed heavy rain falling at 1 to 2 inches per hour along the windward and southeast areas of Hawaii Island, according to National Weather Service forecasters in Honolulu. The area of heavy rain was nearly stationary.
Locations in the advisory include, but are not limited to, Waipio Valley, Hilo, Pahoa, Mountain View and Wood Valley.
The public is cautioned to stay away from streams, drainage ditches and low-lying areas prone to flooding.
Rainfall and runoff will cause hazardous driving conditions because of ponding, poor braking action and reduced visibility.
